The USS Midway was the longest-serving aircraft carrier in the 20th century. Named after the climactic Battle of Midway of June 1942, Midway was built in only 17 months, but missed World War II by one week when commissioned on September 10, 1945. Over a chaotic two day period during the fall of Saigon in April 1975, Midway was a floating base for large Air Force helicopters which evacuated more than 3,000 desperate refugees during Operation Frequent Wind.

On April 11, 1992 the Midway was decommissioned in San Diego and in 2004 it opens for visitor as USS Midway Museum

Naval Aircraft on USS Midway : S3 Viking

The S-3 Viking was the first sub-hunting carrier jet. Due to its small size, the Viking featured space-saving multi-tasking readout displays, allowing the crew to interpret data from several sensors simultaneously.

Naval Aircraft on USS Midway : A1 Skyraider

The A-1 Skyraider was the Navy’s last propeller carrier bomber and was the only naval aircraft to fight in Korea and Vietnam. Because of its massive payload of bombs, rockets, and cannon and its ability to stay over the battlefield for hours, it is superior than other fighter aircraft

Naval Aircraft on USS Midway : E2 Hawkeye

The E-2 Hawkeye was the Navy’s first Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft. Nicknamed the “Hummer” for its distinctive engine sound, the Hawkeye’s prominent radar dish extended radar coverage for hundreds of miles. Packed with a wide range of communications and sensor gear, the Hawkeye is truly a flying command center able not just to detect, track, and analyze targets but to share data with ships and aircraft in the battlegroup

Naval Aircraft on USS Midway : A6 Intruder

The A-6 Intruder set the standard in all-weather bombing for carrier aircraft. Equipped with an attack and navigation computer, the Intruder’s precision bombing made it the ideal choice for complex and dangerous missions deep inside North Vietnam. The A-6 was the mainstay for the Navy’s medium bomber community until superceded by the F/A-18 Hornet in the 1990s.

Though designed as a nuclear bomber, the A-4 Skyhawk became legendary as the Navy’s leading light bomber in the 1960s. Affectionately called “The Scooter”, its rugged simplicity and energetic performance placed the A-4 in the forefront of the close-in bombing war in Southeast Asia.

The F-14 Tomcat used its ‘swing wing’ design for high speed dog fighting with the wings. F-14s were made famous in the popular film “Top Gun” in 1986. Armed with a 20mm cannon and a formidable array of guided missiles, Tomcats were the carrier battlegroup’s first line of defense for more than 30 years.
